The swan girl – Broken Promise

Once upon a time there lived a poor weaver and his wife in a small cottage. One winter night they heard a knock at their door.  When they opened the door they were surprised to find a beautiful girl dressed in a white silvery robe shivering in the cold.

The old couple quickly brought her in and asked her to stay with them. One day the girl said, “Father, I’ll weave a stole for you every night. But you must promise that while I am weaving no one will come into my room.” Though surprised, the old man agreed and that night the girl shut herself in a room.

Early morning, she came out with a rich and beautiful stole. This went on for a few days until one night the old couple were very curious and they peeped into their daughter’s room. And there saw a beautiful swan weaving with her silver feathers. The swan saw them and said in a sad voice, “now that you have seen me, I can’t stay here anymore. The swan said to the old couple I thought I would have loved to stay here forever, but you broke the promise. Then the swan flew away.
